Banner Public Art Competition

The Downtown Oshawa BIA is excited to announce its Banner Public Art Project!

In 2016, the BIA expanded its boundaries, and since then, our membership has been asking for creative colourful solutions to an expanding urban background! The Oshawa Downtown BIA is looking to beautify the downtown landscape through a banner initiative to fill our streets with artwork!

To enhance this project, the Oshawa Downtown BIA is seeking emerging Durham College Student Graphic Designers and Artists new to working in the public realm to submit proposals for our Downtown Oshawa BIA Fall/Winter and/or Holiday Banners. The BIA will be responsible for printing the digitally submitted artwork onto banners and installation.

"The Downtown, Durham College banner competition is an exciting opportunity for our students to have their art displayed prominently throughout the downtown core, while at the same time contribute to the beautification of our downtown. Public art is important to the social fabric of our community and society, as it engages citizens in conversation and can make public spaces more approachable. We are very pleased to be a contributor to this exciting public art project." - Don Lovisa, President, Durham College.

Using a community development lens, the banner initiative wants to involve different stakeholders to enhance and support the thriving art scene of Oshawa. The Oshawa BIA wants to involve Durham College graphic design students to showcase their talents in the medium of their choice to beautify the streetscape of the downtown core. The colours chosen for this initiative are meant to represent the different aspects of downtown - from its vibrant streets and green spaces to its dynamic downtown businesses.

"We're excited to be working with the leaders of tomorrow to design a new look and launch our new logo - community development is at the heart of all Oshawa BIA projects" - Amanda MacDonald, Executive Director, Downtown Oshawa BIA
