  • Nearly 45 years ago, Henry and Richard Bloch founded the company known today as H&R Block.

The brothers started in business in 1946, operating the United Business Company, which offered bookkeeping services for small companies in Kansas City, Missouri.

Among the services they offered was individual income tax return preparation for the executives of their client companies. Word spread and before long, they were preparing individual tax returns by the score. They saw that concentrating on tax preparation service would be both innovative and sound business. And thus, H&R Block, Inc. was formed in 1955 with Henry Bloch as president and chief executive officer and Richard Bloch as chairman of the board.

In 1964 H&R Block opened the first franchised operation in Canada and in 1965, the first company-owned operation. H&R Block Canada, Inc. now prepares two million tax returns annually, making it Canada’s leading tax preparation firm. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, the company serves the taxpaying public in more than 1,000 offices across the country.

In addition to the U.S. and Canada, the company also operates in 13 foreign countries. The company prepares tax returns for Canadians, not just here at home, but in its overseas offices as well – though it may take a little longer!

H&R Block prepares all types of tax returns using the latest in computerized processing and up-to-date electronic filing technology. In addition to personal returns, the company prepares small business, corporate, farm, trucker, fishing, U.S., rental, and estate returns.

H&R Block trains its tax preparers through the H&R Block Income Tax Schools. In Canada, more than 10,000 students enroll in the schools annually. The Level One course involves 69 hours of classroom instruction, and provides training not only to potential H&R Block employees but to employees of some of the top financial institutions in the country, including major banks, mutual fund companies, and brokerage firms. Senior preparers with the company go on to study five different levels of courses.

The training is thorough – so thorough that each H&R Block client receives a written guarantee which is considered the strongest in the industry. This commitment to quality, coupled with dedication to client service are key elements of the company’s success.

H&R Block’s business activities go beyond tax preparation. The company also provides electronic filing, monthly bookkeeping support, and small business accounting.

H&R Block’s vision for the future is to be the preferred tax and financial partner for their customers in all markets they serve.
