What’s Happening Downtown
When folks think of Downtown Oshawa, they may, at first, consider some of our many eating establishments or perhaps the Gennies’ games at the TCC or perhaps even the historic Genosha Hotel. However, when it comes to events, our Downtown is growing in leaps and bounds. We are no longer limited to Show and Shine, Bikes on Bond or Kars on King. The Gennies are still going strong as the crowd of 6,000 last Monday would clearly attest. But there are new kids in town and they bring an exciting new dynamic to the arts, culture and entertainment world. Mansfield’s Cabaret, a black box theatre located at 50 Bond Street East, just east of the 4-corners, is, for the next nine weeks, featuring the Evil Dead, live on stage. This setup is great fun for participants because not only is the quality of the performance outstanding, but the audience is seated in a more intimate setting than in a traditional theatre, being only a few feet away from professional actors. So far, performances are routinely selling out with visitors from as far away as Ottawa, Hamilton and St. Catharines. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Joan and Zac Mansfield are also the driving forces behind Silly Stages, the production company that brings a number of upcoming performances to the Regent Theatre starting with Potted Potter, a world class production with performances at the Regent on March 22, 23 and 24. This summer, Disney’s Little Mermaid will be on stage at the Regent with The Rocky Horror Show scheduled for October. Watch also for Louise Pitre coming soon as she performs a litany of Judy Garland tunes from Broadway. Rounding out the schedule for the near future will be Nunsense and Here on the Flightpath, a Norm Foster play.
Downtown Oshawa has so much to offer with Mansfield’s Cabaret, the Regent Theatre, the Atria, the Music Hall, the Tribute Communities Centre and Yuk Yuk’s on the way. Come on down and just enjoy everything we have to offer.
